Once a Nottingham boy but now very much a serious player on the international jazz scene, Julian Siegel is considered one of the the very best sax players around.
In 2012, I had the opportunity to bring his experimental improvisational quartet to Nottingham Contemporary. Despite Julian Siegel being highly celebrated in the jazz world and being awarded the prestigious BBC Jazz Award, more people need to know about this artful player outside of the London and international jazz circles. As well as leading his Quartet, he is also part of Partisans, a thoroughly bad ass, funky and ferocious jazz set up that is at times a bit like Herbie Hancock on crack. Not the cleanest description, but meant in an entirely complimentary way. Both are great live bands. Check out this track and look out for the new Partisans Album in Autumn.
