Hello 2020 and welcome back 1974 in the form of this outstanding and barely known South African psyche oddity reissued beautifully in association with SHARP FLAT and BBE. Coming out of the fringes of Pretoria, the album is a peculiar combination of Anglophile psychedelic rock and full on ‘Electric Tribal Rock’ with fuzz guitars, swirling organs and Gong-like flute lines. The titles of the tracks themselves on the record differentiate themselves by stating their English or African influences which is an eccentric method in itself (though probably not so strange at the time).
The opening song ‘Shingwanyana’ is worth the buying price alone. A twelve and a half minute epic of driving percussion, vocal chants and groove with simple piano and flickering guitar licks, this is a sure-fire dancefloor starter (I know, I’ve watched it happen on several occasions!).
At times the more Anglocentric psyche tracks like ‘She Regrets’ recall some of the Tropicalia experiments of late 60s São Paulo, the outsiders interpretation of another’s culture through the lens of their own localised influences and lives. There are some serious jump around the room moments with the Jingo-like ‘Shando’ bursting with energy and thrust. This is a must buy for collectors of the more avant-garde end of psyche and African grooves and has been remastered artfully and comprehensively packaged - she’s a beauty!
