Fans of David Bowie’s music take note, BBE Music have something special coming out in May 2021! Label boss Peter along with music exec & DJ Drew McFadden have curated a collection of versions viewed through a contemporary Black music lens to be released as a full compilation entitled ‘Modern Love’.
The first single off the album will aptly be Bowie’s first hit single ‘Space Oddity’ and will be released on Bowie’s birthday - January 8th 2021. The version is an intriguing yet respectful reinterpretation by Grammy-nominated sisters We Are King which showcases the lush synth soul sound that has enabled them to work with artists such as Robert Glasper, Bilal and Kendrick Lamar.
“There were so many amazing Bowie compositions to choose from but Space Oddity has always been our favorite- it’s so visual; it has always felt like time travel in a song. It tells such a vivid and imaginative story of Major Tom’s trip through space and it was such a cool experience to reimagine what it’d be like on the voyage” – We Are KING.

“I felt that the connection between Bowie and Black music styles and culture (especially soul, R&B, jazz, funk, and gospel) had never really been explored before — at least not so much in covers, which tend to lean towards rock. Certainly, there’s been plenty of Bowie covers over the years, but none that have really tapped into what seems to have been a big part of his core musical style and direction.” – Drew McFadden
The album also features: Khruangbin (Right), Helado Negro (Sound & Vision), Matthew Tavares (Heroes), Jeff Parker (Soul Love), Miguel Atwood Ferguson (Life On Mars), Me’shell Ndegeocello (Fantastic Voyage), The Hics (The Man Who Sold The World), Bullion (Where Are We Now), Jonah Mutono (Modern Love), Nia Andrews (Silly Boy Blue), L’Rain (Move On), Sessa (Panic In Detroit), Kit Sebastian (Lady Grinning Soul) and Eddie Chacon feat. John Carroll Kirby (Tonight).
