Turning up just days after I opened up my set for Nottingham Pride with the absolute weapon that is the 1978 original of Sandy Barber’s 'I Think I'll Do Some Stepping (On My Own)' is this sweet remix package from the mighty BBE. Containing two fresh new reworks from disco Don John Morales and Swedish underground hero OPOLOPO, these new babies sympathise completely with the OG but take it’s female empowered energy blast into new places.
OPOLOPO starts in the same vein as his superlative remix of Gregory Porter’s ‘1960 What?’ with a looped slice of slinky bass and spare drums, adding subtle layers of percussion until the original piano steps in setting the scene for Sandy’s killer vocal and the sweeping strings. Deadly funky throughout and with speaker-bumping electronic touches, OPOLOPO’s mix is going to unhinge your hips! John Morales has done what he always does. Under his M+M moniker, the veteran producer and mixer has delivered endless quality stem mixes for BBE over the years and his patient block-building (and removing) way of mixing is in full effect here with dramatic moments throughout. His use of long builds, dropouts and extended percussion breakdowns create a dancefloor tension like no other. The celestial strings have become the main focus behind the vocal and he releases the full track in ecstatic bursts before stealing it away for another moment of pure groove. Oh, and the mix is sublime. Such clarity and punch, it’s outrageous. Go get it!
