Words by Justin Turford
Dave De Rose is a particular favourite of ours here at T&L for his relentless mission to capture those moments of improvisational intensity that can only manifest when brilliant musicians are given great freedom. Whether it is under his ongoing international avant-garde collective Agile Experiments or more recently, the motorik-techno influenced swerve of the Rave At Your Fictional Borders project, groove exploration is allied with noise, drone and ambient notes but always guided by a spirit of jazz improvisation.
We are mighty pleased to host the premiere of the title track of the new Rave At Your Fictional Borders E.P. ‘Potion Trigger’. With collaborators as acclaimed as Jon Scott (drums), Henning Rohschürmann (modular, live sampling & fx) and Marius Mathiszik (guitar, loops & fx) joining him, there is no question about the intensity levels they are hitting.
‘Potion Trigger’ will hit you somewhere, like a potion it will do to you what it did to the musicians who's shell it channeled through when they improvised it into being. The potion triggers a journey of endless build to little but no relief. This is not chill time. There's the endless repetition, there's the disjointed power of Jon Scott's masterful drum shifting, never too much too soon, never letting go of the fundamentals keeping the pump riding high till he burns you dry. Marius Mathiszik's riff holds the fort to the end of time while Dave De Rose's outer-worldly bass tone backs it, dripping into bigger and bigger pools of bottom end allowing Henning Rohschürmann's freak-power sonics to venture through you. You've been triggered and now you know it.
"This was one of those moments in the session where i was so excited about the present that i couldn't quite stand in it. I was just hanging on to dear life, desiring no more but to stay deeply embedded into the heavenly flux of flow Marius and Jon were creating. We all love techno, repetition after repetition, trance inducing music from Africa and Latin America, we all love Steve Reich and we all love fu**ed up noise, so when on top of the mighty locked groove Henning started to sing wildly into his modular system creating these waves of ambiguous drone-like-whale sounds I started to actually completely lose myself. I felt like the potion had reached my bones. This track has to be one of my favorite things I've ever been a part of." - Dave De Rose
‘Potion Trigger’ will be released on 4 November 2023
