If you’re a little like me i.e. someone who has known, danced to (and occasionally produced) house music most of their adult lives but has fallen out of love with the genre (mainly due its relentless dominance of dance music culture and the simplistic rhythm fascism of the 4/4 groove) then you know that it takes something special for you to sit up and care again.
Marcel Vogel’s Lumberjacks In Hell is one of those few ‘house’ labels that still holds my attention. This is house without boundaries and generic dullness and for their 10th Anniversary as a label, he’s releasing a sexy as fuck double 12 incher bursting with soul, funk and party-starting power. From Detroit Swindle’s aquatic organ wobbler ‘Time’ to PBR Streetgang’s Larry Heard-esque ‘Madame Z’, the Sugarhill Gang swank of BoogieNite’s ‘Boys Talkin’ and James Curd’s epic ‘Lets get Get Get It’ all eight tracks included are surefire winners and it must be gutting that the LiH crew can’t get on the get down and party this release as its meant to happen.
When (if) my personal DJ life starts again, I will surely be dropping tunes from this release and as someone who doesn’t EVER play house anymore, that is the biggest compliment I can give…
