Words by Justin Turford
The always on point On The Corner Records are releasing the cosmic-jumble of ''Coming Of The Moon Dogs' by Planet Battagon affiliates Edrix Puzzle in October and it’s a heavy affair. Self-described as ‘Mwandishi-era Herbie Hancock meets space-weight electronics, classical violin & instrumental analogue noir’, this brooding, interstellar collision of improvisational dread is the brainchild of producer, multi/instrumentalist and veteran drummer, Nathan “Tugg” Curran. The bottom end is as dark as Prince Far I’s growliest dubs and the shadows of Miles’ Bitches Brew / Live Evil’ era and Herbie’s later satellites of fusion mayhem ripple throughout the record. There is a percussive density that when not harnessing the 70s cosmic jazz / kraut pocket, reminds me of artists such as The Leaf Label’s Eardrum or ILL CONSIDERED at their most propulsive. There’s a lot going on. From Stockhausen to Drexciya, noise, funk, experimental jazz and electronics fight-dance in a post-punk space-ring. Gnarly stuff, be warned.
