Words by Justin Turford
Dolenz’ latest EP for D-Bridge’s superlative label of high tension electronica, Exit Records, sees the producer reaching deep inside to discover a more organic emotional sound without losing his acclaimed use of crunch and growl. Hip Hop comes in many forms, from the party to the poetic, and Dolenz obviously has a full education in the genre but his music touches on a much more varied bag of ingredients.
Cerebral electronica permeates EP opener ‘Nazca’ with it’s Plaid like bubbling percussion and minor key melancholy reminiscent of obvious influence Dabrye. Oddly treated synths can’t mask the lovely melodic arch of the piece while a heavy boom bap nods the groove hard. Neo-soul outsider Steve Spacek adds his warm vocal tones to the gorgeous title track ‘Kuntur’. Reversed chords and drenched vocal harmonies propel this brooding yet dreamy slow banger (the rumbling synth bass is a monster waiting at the door).
‘Indigenome’ is possibly my favourite track on the EP. A wild march forwards via hard, sparse and menacing bass hits, twisted synth lines and arm-snapping beats. The animals will be in fear if the kids aren’t. EP closer ‘Blue Lights’ features UK rapper Sonnyjim and showcases Dolenz’ hip hop credentials. Having previously worked with UK legend Jehst and Dilla favourite Guilty Simpson, he knows how to lay down a beat for a top class rhyme artist. Head-snapping drums, a snarling bass line that Cannibal Ox would be proud of and destroyed strings manage to be both maximalist and spacious enough for the track to move at it’s own dangerous pace. If this is Dolenz’ new emotion, better give him some love. An exceptional release 9/10
